Positive Induction

Positive Induction

Lucy’s birth didn’t go quite to plan, but Kerry had talked about this possibility in our zoom sessions so I was prepared! The sessions took away the apprehension and fear of giving birth and I actively looked forward to it. As Lucy went well overdue despite everything I tried, we opted to accept induction, but the afternoon before, I became worried that she wasn’t moving as much. Everything checked out when we went on the monitors, but as we were due for induction in 12 hours anyway the South Lakes Birth Centre offered to start things off that evening.

In the end we only needed the initial part of induction (pessaries); my water broke naturally, and I didn’t need the drip. It was slow but steady progress, and I think that was because I was able to stay relaxed about the process. I found the initial breathing techniques really helpful with early labour, but once into the second stage I did need additional pain relief and thanks to our discussions with Kerry I knew what my options were and felt empowered to ask for it. I loved the birthing pool while it was really hot, but as it cooled down I had gas and air and diamorphine instead. I felt I really got into a rhythm with dealing with the surges and was even weirdly enjoying the process for a while.

I think the midwife was a bit surprised when I said I was feeling the urge to push, but she checked me and I was fully dilated. Towards the end I got panicky, as I had a burst of contractions one on top of the other without a pause and it was hard to catch my breath, then I found the pushing stage a really unpleasant sensation even though it wasn’t the most painful part. This was where I was really glad my partner had attended the sessions with me, because he was able to reassure me that Lucy really was making progress even though I couldn’t tell that she was moving down, and he coached me back into the down breathing and reminded me I could do this.

Lucy came out a bit fast and I had some tearing but I was just so happy and relieved, and the next few minutes were really lovely; I had this tiny slippery baby on my chest, cuddling her skin to skin, feeling amazed that she was finally here. Unfortunately once the placenta had delivered I had a bad haemorrhage, so Lucy went skin to skin with my partner. I just kept my eyes on them both while lots of lovely medical staff got everything under control for me!

I know I wouldn’t have coped so well with labour and delivery without Kerry’s sessions, it was really empowering to have the knowledge about what my body and baby were doing and to actively feel like I had things I could do to help with the pain, and it made a huge difference to the support my partner was able to offer me as well.
