Unexpected but beautiful second birth

Unexpected but beautiful second birth

Introduction

I came to Kerry during my second pregnancy. Already dreading giving birth having waited 4 years to conceive following a horrible labour first time around (obviously hadn’t hypnobirthed!)
I’ll admit to being somewhat skeptical. I wasn’t a first time mum, I’d been through this, knew the process. So what could she possibly teach me or tangibly do to alleviate the fear and negative associations I held around having a baby. I couldn’t have been more wrong.
Via our one to one sessions Kerry covered both the physical and the psychological aspects of childbirth. I was surprised to learn so much about the process I didn’t already know from the standard antenatal classes. This was so helpful in reframing my mindset – knowledge is power! Kerry’s wealth of experience and relaxed approach meant the sessions felt more like a casual chat between friends. However one which unbelievably left me feeling strong, capable and even excited to give birth. The transformation for me was incredible and one which I honestly didn’t believe possible.
I began practising the breathing techniques and used the relaxations daily – they were even helpful in helping me sleep during that uncomfortable third trimester!

Labour

When it came to my labour I had planned to birth in the pool in a community midwife led unit. Unfortunately, 2 weeks overdue, my waters began to leak, and with contractions not picking up fast enough this wasn’t to be the case.
Despite a change of plan, and having to undergo an induction (worst case scenario for me). I remained calm, utilising the learning Kerry had instilled in me.
Contractions came thick and fast and my labour was a long active 7 hours (who said second babies were easier??!).
An emergency section was discussed at one point due to babies heart rate dropping. However having discussed this scenario as a possibility during our sessions, I felt prepared for this potential outcome.
Fortunately I was able to deliver naturally with just gas and air and some morphine, no epidural and no intervention. That was absolutely due to the breathing techniques providing a focus throughout.
Whilst I may not have had the delivery I had hoped for. I cannot credit Kerry enough for equipping me with the knowledge and toolsets which undoubtedly transformed what could have been a traumatic experience, into one in which I felt empowered and in control throughout.
